What is Apple Pay, and Why is it So Secure?
With Apple Pay, customers now have a quick, convenient, and most importantly, a secure way to complete a payment transaction with a simple touch on their iPhone or Apple Watch using Apple Wallet and Touch ID. When making a purchase, a customer simply holds their iPhone or Apple Watch near an Apple Pay-enabled contactless reader. If using iPhone, the customer places their finger on the home button to enable Touch ID verification. If using Apple Watch, the customer simply double-clicks the side button holds the display of Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. Haptic feedback confirms the purchase is finalized.
Apple Pay uses a technology called tokenization where the card number is transformed into a pseudo-random sequence of digits that resembles a normal card number. The transformed card number, as its name implies, is just a “Token” that does not reveal the actual card number. As an added layer of security, the identity of customers who pay with their iPhone devices is verified by Touch ID.
